Same 5B hickory body — the only difference is the tip shape. Barrel tips have a wider surface area that produces a fuller, warmer drum tone and richer cymbal wash. Round tips are smaller and more precise, giving you tighter articulation. For live settings where volume and warmth matter, barrel wins.
Slightly lighter actually — the 5B barrel comes in at 4.4 oz vs 4.9 oz for the round tip. The feel and balance remain very close to the standard 5B Long, with the main difference being the warmer, fuller sound from the larger tip.
Rock, gospel, worship, and any live setting where you need volume and warmth. Barrel tips fill a room better than round tips. If you need tight, articulate definition for studio work, go with round tips instead.
